Love Your Liver

Your liver does so much for you and it is essential to your health!  Your liver helps rid your body of toxins, it filters your blood, aids in digestion, builds proteins, synthesizes hormones, maintains blood sugar regulation between meals and more.  We need our livers to last our entire lifetime so understanding how to support liver health and what impedes liver health is important.

Foods are obviously a big piece of what can impact our liver health.  Live-loving foods consist of beets, artichokes, green leafy veggies, avocados, sweet potato, cherries, avocados and more.  These foods offer a variety of health benefits such as anti-cancerous properties, antioxidants, reducing fat storage, and helping the liver recover from injury.

On the flip side it is important to know what foods are not serving you or your liver.  Foods that are treated with pesticides can be harmful as leftover pesticide residue can negatively impact your liver.  Cassava is a rapidly growing “health food” however, the research shows that if this is not properly prepared or consumed excessively, it too can have negative impacts on liver health.  Nightshades are a family of plants including tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant as examples.  Nightshades should be avoided in people with existing liver disease and in animal studies liver enzymes were found to be elevated in diets high in nightshade consumption.  Therefore I usually recommend these foods be eaten more sparingly.
