Inflammation & Your Diet
Inflammation can be far reaching in the body and impact every organ system. An area of the body that is particularly sensitive to inflammation is our cardiovascular system. When we have inflammation present we develop an environment prone to producing plaque in our artery walls. Plaque in arterial walls can lead to stroke, heart attack, ischemia (reduced blood flow), and other cardiovascular events.
Can we change this with our diet? Fortunately, the research looks really positive! A study small study conducted evaluated several blood markers including lipoprotein A (Lp(a)), LDL (unhealthy form of cholesterol), hs-CRP (predictive marker of heart disease), and IL-6 (inflammatory mediator). The study notes that “Elevated Lp(a) is independently associated with cardiovascular disease, and the LPA gene was observed to have the strongest genetic link to cardiovascular disease.”
The participants were instructed to change their diet to a plant-based diet for 4 weeks. In that 4-week time frame they found significant reductions in Lp(a), low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) particles, serum interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), high‐sensitivity c‐reactive protein (hs‐CRP), along with other markers. All of these markers are directly correlated to inflammation in the cardiovascular system. All of which were reduced in 4 SHORT WEEKS!
