High blood pressure is a common concern among the adult American population. In 2018 the American Heart Association estimated that about 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure.  High blood pressure can be caused from a variety of factors.  Some of the more common causes of high blood pressure include poor diet, obesity, poor sleep, high stress and kidney disease.


Many people diagnosed with high blood pressure will be diagnosed with “primary” or “essential hypertension” meaning the cause is unknown.  As naturopathic doctors, our goal is to uncover the cause to better direct treatment.


Everyone with elevated blood pressure has the power to change their diet, improve their sleep and utilize stress management techniques to decrease their blood pressure, even if there is a blood pressure medication on board.  If your blood pressure is very elevated a blood pressure medication is the most indicated and the safest choice to consider.  If you have mildly elevated blood pressure you have more choices including natural options to modify your blood pressure.
