Boost your Immune System with Probiotics
Healthy bacteria are normally present in the gut. Imbalances can arise between ‘good’ bacteria and ‘bad’ bacteria. It has been well established that probiotics can be helpful with gastrointestinal issues such as bloating and constipation. However, recent research shows that the gut flora is closely related to proper immune system function. In fact, as much as 70-80% of immune system function is in the gut. Inside the intestines there are lymph nodes, which are immune tissue that can mount a response to pathogens like bad bacteria and viruses. If there is inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract from stress or a poor diet, the immune system suffers and lets down its defenses leading to chronic allergies, colds and flus.
Some foods contain probiotics such as yogurt. However, yogurt generally does not contain a high enough amounts of probiotics to be therapeutic and many people are sensitive to dairy. If you choose to supplement, remember that not all probiotic products are created equal. It is important to get a high quality probiotic supplement with a full spectrum of different strains of bacteria. Consult your Naturopathic doctor to find out what supplements are best for you.
